WARNING
to Hillside residents
HILLSIDE POLICE
URGE RESIDENTS TO BE ON LOOKOUT FOR SCAM ARTISTS
Hillside Police
Chief Robert Quinlan warns residents that a group of scam artists
have been operating in the township, using a variety of methods to
defraud victims.
Senior citizens
should be particularly alert for strangers who appear at their door
offering to do home repairs. The repairmen will typically offer to
fix their driveways or roofs and ask for immediate cash payment.
Although they are usually not violent, they may attempt to enter a
victims house by intimidation. In many cases, they prey on a
victims kindness by asking for a drink of water or to use the
bathroom or a telephone. These are usually scam artists using
diversionary tactics to enter your residence. While the decoy is
drinking your water and thanking you for your kindness, his or her
partner may be in your bedroom stealing your valuables.
Some of these
groups include elderly women and men who will appear at your doorstep
looking pathetic and asking for your help. They might say they are
not feeling well and need to sit down. Tell them you will get them
immediate assistance but do not be fooled. CALL THE POLICE AT ONCE.
If they are truly in need, they will wait. Most others will leave in
a hurry.
The police chief
urges residents confronted with such persons to lock their doors and
call
9-1-1
immediately. Do NOT let them in your house under any circumstances.
DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED. Most of these scam artists count on victims
who feel sorry for them and want to help someone in need. Some will
pretend to be from the Water Company, PSE&G, or cable TV Company.
They may carry phones or portable radios to look official. DO NOT
BE FOOLED. Lock them out and DIAL
9-1-1 at once.
According to
Chief Quinlan, many victims do not even realize what has happened
until hours later, when they notice cash or jewelry missing. If they
are legitimate, they will not run away when you call the police. Try
to get a good look at their license plate number and vehicle then
describe it to the police when you call.
If you need home
repairs, the police chief suggests that you check the Yellow Pages or
a reputable hardware store or lumber yard for names of reliable
repairmen. DO NOT deal with door-to-door peddlers offering to do work
you. When in doubt, dial
9-1-1
for assistance.
